1. Most importantly, she only accepts jobs which are within her areas of knowledge/ specialisation and translate mainly into her native language.
2. Before commencing a project she consults the customer about: his needs, intended use and purpose, audience and style of the translation; whether there are any ambiguous or implicit messages that need to be rendered adequately in the target text. It is crucial to arrange a close co-operation with the customer throughout the whole process in order to clarify any issues that arise during the translation (e.g. missing text, inconsistencies, typos, terminology issues, etc.). Beata always asks whether the customer owns any glossaries, term bases or other sources of information that are required to ensure the consistent use of terminology and that the customer’s preferences are fulfilled.
3. She pre-reads or skims through the source text (for larger projects) to get acquainted with the subject matter, style, choice of vocabulary and any linguistic devices (literary translation).
4. Beata carries out the terminology research and gets acquainted with a particular subject area in both the source and the target languages.
5. She translates using a CAT tool (Computer-Assisted Translation) called SDL Trados, which assists her throughout the project to guarantee the highest accuracy and consistency of the translation while facilitating a smooth translation process. It also enables her to develop project-specific glossaries for future referencing. She translates the original text using all of her knowledge, experience, skills, and available resources.
6. After the first translation Beata edits it for terminology and researches the terms that raise doubts. If necessary, she contacts the customer for clarification.
7. Beata proofreads the translation for accuracy (meaning, terminology), style (register, choice of vocabulary), grammar (spelling, syntax, grammar errors, typos), formatting (layout, fonts), completeness (against the source text).
8. She then applies elements of localisation (e.g. date and time formats, currencies, numerals, capitalisation, proper names and titles, telephone numbers and addresses, weights and measures, formatting of numbers, differences in symbols, punctuation rules).
9. Finally, Beata reviews the translation for transparency, that is whether it reads naturally in the target language. The transparent translation is idiomatic and appears to a native speaker of the target language to have originally been written in that language. While translating into English, an additional proofreading by a native speaker is available upon request.
