Let me introduce you to the rules of translation projects’ pricing. There are many factors being taken into consideration while translating and consequently estimating the cost of the translation project. The main factors include:

• source and target languages (in my case these are either Polish → English or English → Polish)
• difficulty of translation (general vs. specialised vocabulary used)
• number of characters/words/pages of the source text (1 billing page = 1200 characters without spaces)
• deadline (whether it’s an urgent project or not)
• format of the source document (e.g. hand-written documents might be difficult to read or even illegible, which makes the translation process more complicated and takes more time)

There are so many factors that one can’t just establish one fixed price corresponding to all translation projects. Each assignment needs to be evaluated separately – that’s what the FREE QUOTATION tool is for. If you provide all information required in the Quotation Form or supply your document for quotation, you will get an exact price within hours or sometimes even minutes. However, to those who have no idea about translation pricing at all, I will tell that the minimum rate per word that I charge is GBP 0.07 (7 pence/word), which is generally lower compared to prices translation agencies and companies offer. There might be extra charges for rush translation projects when it’s required from the translator to work overtime (more than 8 hours a day or over the weekend). I charge 1,5 times more for overtime hours/weekend hours.

Except for that, the PRICE is INCLUSIVE of: customer consultation, terminology research, editing, proofreading, reviewing and elements of localisation. Naturally, if the customer doesn’t require proofreading and/or reviewing, a lower rate will be negotiated. It’s all the matter of successful communication between the translator and the customer and it’s my job to ensure that there are no misunderstandings.

Language specific pricing factors

One needs to know that an equivalent number of words of one billing page is different for Polish and English. It results from the multiple differences there are between the two languages. The main difference being the absence of articles ‘a’, ‘an, ‘the’ in Polish. For instance, a Polish noun ‘kot’ which stands for ‘a cat’ is one word, whereas in English it gives us two words – ‘a cat’. Also personal pronouns such as I, he, she, we are often completely omitted in Polish. Consequently, if we translate from Polish to English, we get more words in a target document. Taking into consideration the fact that Polish words are usually longer, we might get a similar amount of characters, but a completely different amount of words between a source and a target texts. That’s why a word count differs between English and Polish.

Depending on whether the source document is text-accessible or not (e.g. an image file is not) you will either get a quote based on the character/word count or a fixed price based on my rough estimate. It would be too time consuming to determinate the exact character/word count for each image file – especially those larger ones. Nevertheless, all quotes are subject to written confirmation upon receipt of the order so you will always know how much you pay and what you are paying for.
